Frequently Asked Questions
|
1. How big are your stadium models?
-- All of my models were built on a base that measures 24" x 24". They vary between 6"-8" high and are all built to a scale of 1:600, which means 1 inch
equals 50 feet.
2. What are they made of?
-- Mostly basswood, which is a popular crafting wood similar to balsa, but harder and more dense. I also use some balsa wood, memory foamcore and
Gatorfoam, which is a wood veneer reinforced foam board.
3. How long do they take you to build?
-- My first stadium, the Cimarron, took nearly a year. My latest projects have averaged about four months for each. I haven't tried to calculate how many hours,
but it's a lot.
4. Why don't you craft more replica stadiums instead of original ones?
-- I don't think I'd find much satisfaction in it. I've got so many of my own ideas I want to build that crafting replicas (someone else's ideas) really wouldn't
inspire me. I did the Dodger Stadium concept because It still gave me a lot of room for creativity because it's really quite a different stadium than actually
exists in Chavez Ravine. Not to say I'll never build another replica, but it's not anything I have plans for at this time.
5. How do you make these stadiums? Do you work from a template? What tools do you use?
-- Usually I make several rough drawings and notes, and then translate that into a 1:600 scale field template which I trace onto the wood base. That's usually
the only time during the entire project that I'll use a template. My primary tool is actually an exacto knife-- virtually every one of the thousands of pieces that
make up these models is measured, cut and painted by hand.
